Analysis of Wordsworth’s “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”

Wordsworth’s I wandered Lonely as a Cloud is a descriptive poem in which the author expresses the happiness he gets after enjoying the beauty of a great number of daffodils.  He begins the poem by telling his loneliness. This solitude of his, however, is gradually lessened as he keeps on gazing the nice feature and movement of the daffodils. After describing how the blowing wind makes the flowers move, dance, and stretch continuously in an endless line along the bay, the poet states that whenever he feels sad, he will try to recollect the beauty of the daffodils in his mind. By doing this he will directly finds ‘the bliss of solitude’ which enables him to get happiness.

The subject matter of this poem is the beauty of the daffodils seen by the poet, because nearly all of the lines are dominated by the descriptions, which emphasize those flowers’ beauty. It is true that the poet, sometimes, talks about other things, like stars on the Milky Way and waves of the lake beside the flowers, but these things are merely meant to be a comparison to emphasize the impression of the beauty of the daffodils. The poet states that the beauty of the dance of the daffodils far surpasses the dance of the lake: “The waves beside them dance; but they outdid the sparkling waves in glee” (ll. 13-14).

Despite the fact that the beauty of the daffodils dominates the poem, the poets do not present it for its own sake. He actually relates that beauty to his life. In the first lines he, by using a simile in which he compares himself to a floating cloud, precisely describes how deep his loneliness is. Then, in the final lines, he resolutes that the beauty of the daffodils facilitates him a very precious quite time to retrospect his life. After the retrospection he finally manages to expel his sadness out. We can easily understand this phenomenon by realizing that solitude can be used as a good condition to make one’s life retrospection to understand his true self. (Self-understanding is one of the greatest wealth and joy. The world’s history has shown that monks and other holy men always use solitude to get more understanding about life). Considering these facts, we can say that the underlying idea or theme of this poem is that the beauty of the nature is an effective facility for self-retrospection and a suitable remedy for the poet’s sadness.

The use of the beauty of the nature as the theme of a work is actually typical of Wordsworth. Nearly in all of his poems he worships the nature. What attracts him in the nature is not only its beauty but also the existence of its restorative power caused by his belief that the nature is the dwelling of the Supreme Being.  That is why I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud does not merely describe the beauty of the daffodils. It also expresses that the presence of God in the nature’s beauty makes it one of the best answer for one of the most inherent problems in human life: spiritual vacancy:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

(ll. 19-24).

Wordsworth’s use of the beauty of the nature in this poem can be considered as his opposition towards the classicists who glorify the use of rational thinking rather than imaginative thinking to find the answers for human life’s problems.  Wordsworth believes that sometimes-imaginative thinking is more useful.  That is why, in this poem, he writes: “I gazed and gazed – but little thought what wealth the show to me had brought” (ll. 17-18).  Through these lines Wordsworth probably means to emphasize the use of imagination, emotion, and feeling (elements of imaginative thinking) in order to find the solutions for people’s life.

In this poem, Wordsworth uses images very extensively in order to let the reader involve in the experiences he is communicating. For instance, how he is wandering and floating lonely as a cloud “o’er vales and hills” is important they enable the reader to visualize the surroundings being described in the poem. Some other effective images are the “golden daffodils” that were “fluttering and dancing in the breeze.” Anyone who has observed a breezy day, and the way that plants, flowers, and water appear and move on such a day, could easily see through Wordsworth’s eyes this scene. We see the shock of yellow (he says golden) and the mass of flowers, swaying and bending in the breeze. Wordsworth’s use imagery in this poem really enables the reader to share the experiences being communicated.

Analysis of Frost’s “Fire and Ice”
In Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice” he tries to compare and contrast two destructive forces: fire and ice. Frost presents two different options of how the world will end.
“Some say the world will end in fire”
    “Some say in ice”
Then he goes on to relate fire to the human emotion of desire and ice to hate. Looking back at the third line, the use of “I” shows a personal connection to the emotions of desire and hate. Putting this poem in the context of a relationship, desire and hate are emotions that people often feel. The final line of the poem shows that human emotions of fire and ice are equally harmful and can easily bring about the “end” of a relationship.
In this poem, conflicting emotions such as hate and desire have been aroused by the poet. The last line of Frost’s poem asserts that the two destructive forces are equally great. Fire, or passion, consumes and destroys quickly, leaving ashes in its wake. Ice, or hatred, destroys more slowly. It causes objects to become so immovable that they crack from the pressure created; leaving split remains that once were whole. In just a few lines Frost is able to portray a huge meaning to his readers. Through literary devices, Frost reveals what will ultimately bring the world to an end. He provides as with two paths that will end the world which are fire and ice.
The most noticeable literary device used in Frost’s “Fire and Ice” is metaphor. The words “fire” and “ice” are compared to ways that Frost believes the world will end. Fire is compared to desire when Frost states in lines three and four:

“From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.”

Here Frost is referring to his own life and feelings of desire. By comparing fire to desire we get the sense that desire is a sin. Ice is compared to hatred in lines six through eight:

“I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
    Is also great.”

Here, Frost also refers to his own experiences with hate. By comparing fire to desire and ice to hate he emphasizes their destruction. This catches the readers’ attention and helps to convey Frost’s meaning in the poem. Frost is also comparing acts of nature to acts of humans. The natural forces of fire and ice are conveyed as equally destructive as the most common acts of humans which are desire, or love, and hate. Here Frost is pointing out to his readers that we are just as destructive to our world as natural disasters. In order to effectively communicate the darker feelings felt in a relationship, Frost uses the following poetic devices: imagery, denotations and connotations, and figurative language.
The speaker utilizes images to help emphasize a person’s feelings in a relationship. The first image of fire is used both in the title and twice in the poem. Fire, when uncontrolled, viciously consumes all around it, wanting more and more as it grows. In a relationship, this fire can be set off in an instant. Desire, or jealousy, can occur in a relationship, and consequently can consume an individual until there is nothing left to burn. The second image of ice is also used in the title and twice in the poem. In Dante’s Infernal, the freezing temperatures of hell attempt to drive the life out of a person. Similarly, hate forces the other person away, driving the life out of a relationship. When left uncontrolled, these darker emotions can bring about the end of a relationship.
The poems meaning is also communicated by the denotations and connotations of words. The poet uses words that mean or suggest passion/consumption, knowledge/experience and death/destruction. Passion and consumption are suggested by the words “fire,” “desire,” and “taste.” The words “some say” represent knowledge of a group of people; while the first person “I know” suggests personal experience. “End,” “fire,” “ice,” “perish” and “destruction” all denote death and destruction.
The use of figurate language further adds to the meaning of the poem. The primary source of figurative language is through the use of symbolization. The symbolism of fire, along with the denotations and connotations, further add to the meaning of the poem. Another use of symbolism is through the use of the word “ice.” Ice represents hate. Finally, the poet uses “the world” as a symbol for a relationship. All of these symbols help to tie together the poem by making desire and hate feelings felt in a relationship. In addition to the use of symbols, the poet also uses understatements to add to the tone. The poem ends with the line “And would suffice” which oversimplifies the meaning that has been created. By using this line, the poet emphasizes the harm of desire and hate in a relationship. Lastly, paradox is used in the line: “But if I had to perish twice”. While a person is unable to die two times, the line is used figuratively to demonstrate that desire is equally as harmful as hate.

  4. Hi Christina,
I see that you did understand the poem. However, what you express in your reply is only what one can see on the surface level. You should have provided more details in the ‘detailed meaning’ section!
The intention section also needs more argument.
How many times did you try to consider the poem before writing your analysis? I guessed not more than 5 times. I would like you to think harder in the future. I believe you can do far better than this! Remember, true success belongs to those who strives and works hard to get it.
    Best wishes.

The writer feel that from his experience, in this world there is no peace, only to feel what he called fire. I think the fire describe something that is difficult to change so there is no love and peace, such as hatred and violence.
The detail meaning from each are Title ( Fire and Ice ) these are 2 things that are not united. In general, fire describe something that relates to things that are difficult to be transformed and ice describe something that can gives peace and comfortable. Line 1 and 2 are Many people argue that their life will be end with violence but some people also argue their life will be end with love. Line 3 and 4 are from experience of writer, he feel no one make him comfort, he need love but he did not get it, he know hatred/ violence because he ever feel it. Line 5 and 6 are if the hatred / violence lost, one thing unforgettable from him is he ever feel hatred / violence. Line 7,8 and 9 are the important thing is the love. Love can change the hatred / violence. And it’s better if finish the problem with love and without hatred / violence.
The intention from these are as long as human life, maybe they also ever feel hatred / violence, but it’s better if they are end the problem without hatred / violence. Hatred/ violence will not change it to be better and make it to be big problem. So, change hatred / violence into love.
Subject matter are the writer ( Robert Frost) lives in the difficult situation, where he find the situation fill with hatred and violence very long. But in the other side, he wants something different happen to change the Fire ( hatred / violence) to be Ice (love / peace )
The suitable theme is about feeling in the difficult situation. And connotation from this poem are 1. world will end in Fire is this world will end with violence and hatred, feeling uncontroll. 2.world will end in Ice is the feeling is uncomfortable. 3. Favor fire is feeling that he can feel kind of fire and ice like the poem. 4.Destruction ice is how the situation can change to be better.
Imagery analysis are Fire:He feel the situation uncomfortable. I think this condition imagine that there are many hared and violence. And Ice : He wish something happen and change it to be better.

We can’t imagine what will look like this world if it end in fire and ice, it will be so hot and so cool. I think this poet just to remind us to be careful. This is the recognizing imagery.

    • Hello Maria,
I appreciate your trial to analyze the poem as comprehensively as possible.
Why didn’t you argue deeper about …Fire is what we get from our bad life, but ice is the effect we can get from our good life? You should have explained it in details.
Please note that the more you read a poem, the deeper your understanding will be. However, practice makes perfect. Try your best in the future.

Fire and Ice by Robert Frost describes about the end of the world. Jealousy that will end thew world when he talks about fire and when talking about ice, he probably means something like cold war, or humans having cold hearts, not mixing with others of their society and unaware of kith and kin.
The detail meaning is he talking about the end of the world in a literal sense or is he eluding to the loss of hope.
The intention of this poem is the power and impact of fire and ice. In a simple world, we are living in a world full of fire and ice.We suffer from the pain of desire and coldness. However, the fire and the ice really have some connection.
The connotation in this poem are fire means the emotional, taste means more than about feeling and ice to the angry.
The poet describe the imagery that it is literally about the end of the world, but ice and fire, at least in my opinion, are just metaphors that we commonly attach to some emotions.

    • Dear Yuliana,

You have some good points in this analysis. However you should have supported them with convincing arguments to them clearer. Be more careful also with your grammar.

Ice is associated with hate that can be a powerful destroyer. Both of them are dangerous because can be destroy life.

The intention of this poem, the words that exist in the poem is easily captured and understood. This is shown in (desire) fire and (hate) ice that both are equally dangerous and cause the end of a life. The subject matter of this poem is a fire and an ice. There are two options for ending a life that through fire or ice. Fire is associated with desire and ice is associated with hate. Both of them have capacity that can be cause of the end of a life. The theme of this poem is the end of a life will occur. This is by a fire or an ice which both these elements can crush live. Connotations of this poem are fire means desire to get something, ice means hate that is influenced by a sense of anger, and taste means how to handle feelings. Imagery in this poem is about how the world will end. Fire is a desire that can be uncontrolled. Ice is a hate that can be cause anger. The second element will cause the sin and destroy life.

    • Hello Nilam,

Your point in the first paragraph is quite interesting. However, what you mean to say in the second paragraph is hard to perceive because you talk about some topic in a single paragraph and some grammatical errors in it make the ideas obscure.

    Analysis
Frost’s “Fire and Ice” is a descriptive poem in which the author expresses the human nature and show how they can lead to the destruction of mankind. The general meaning is talking about the process of the end world.. In this poem the author use the fire as a greed and desire, whereas ice to show a hatred. In this poem Frost write how our earth will be end, if the human has greed (or desire) and hatred. He think that he live in the desire where the desire like a fire. He has the other meaning about the fire and ice, and related it to the human life. The human life will be end, not depends with the desire but with the hatred too.

The intention is to make an aware that if the human life with a greed and hatred feeling, its make a destruction to their life. Forst reminds the readers to keep their attitude, their environment, and respect with another people. Hope the human can do the best for their life to get the beautiful life.

The subject matter of this poem is the destruction of the world, or the destruction of the human life.

For the connotation Forst used the words “Some say the world will end in fire”. It show that how the situation of the world full of the desire and hatred.

The natural forces like use fire and ice is the theme of this poem. But, in this poem the meaning of fire and ice change to the feeling. So, I think the theme of this poem is the human’s behavior. Forst use this theme to show the relation of the greed with the hatred as the one cause to destruction the world. The word desire is being compared to fire, and like a fire, desire, or greed, spreads rapidly and devours everything in its path, until there is no more left to burn. A poem not structured by fact, but of opinion. Throughout the poem, Forst use the metaphors, imagery, and little bit of alliteration to convey his message, and use the fire and ice word to make a message about the destruction world.

In this poem, the author uses the images very extensively to make creates a more personal and emotional effect that helps connect with the reader. For instance, when he write Some say the world will end, some say in ice, it make the reader to make an image about it. If the readers have a good meaning about this poem, the Forst’s poem can help the readers to aware that they must be life without feel like a greed or hatred, because it will be a destruction to human life in the world. The important way to get the happiness life is the human must keep their attitude and behavior.

The poem use the “e” rhyme, and make the poem so easy to read. The rhyme make the readers easy to read and make the readers get the good meaning for their life.

I appreciate your great trial to analyze the poem thoroughly. However, you should have supported every point more comprehensively to make your ideas clearly.

    Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
    Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice
    (Robert Frost)

In general and detailed meaning these poem tell us about life have two relation human nature and elements, after I read and search little about this poem I really like about this comment from

    Jesse Rudolph  (12/15/2009 8:56:00 AM)

and from this poem I remember with a story from biblical, when God used fire in the bible, like sodom and gomora, it was out of brief anger. It burned, but in its wake, there was more. Everytime God used water (since he never used ice really) , it made permanent change. Fire burns, but in its wake is fertility and new beginnings. When Ice or water cause destruction, it takes a long time for progress to take new root.

Intention about fire and ice is the two relation from this poem tell us fire is an obvious metaphor for emotion. When we are angry, our faces may turn red, our body temperature may rise and we loose all control of ourselves as we burn furiously in a wild. And what happens when you put ice near fire? It melts into water. And what is water? It is the elixir of life. We all need it and without it, all life would die (end of the world) . So if we can achieve a harmony between reason and emotion without ever letting either really take over.

The subject matter from this poem it is very meaningful because from this poem we can get the good things that the relation from ice and fire like a “from what I’ve tasted of desire” it can describe we need an ice when the fire in our heart.

The fire and ice as the theme from the poem and describe the poem with clearly not only to explain about the human nature but also tell us about elements. And that’s why this poem explain us to understand we need ice to cold our emotion, and fire to warm the cold condition.

And this poem make some imagery about the life will be connected, from the thing and the other things.

Connotation from this poem make a description if ice is an good elements and fire is bad elements, both of elements are connected.

Over all I understand about this poem from many comment I ride from this page http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/fire-and-ice/comments.asp?page2

In general this poem wants to share the thoughts of the poet, that this world will be end because of over the time many people that have desire too much and keep the hatred in they live. In this case, desire means power, money, and status. As long as the people did not realize that what they are doing is wrong, it can be caused the end of the world.

In the beginning, the poet describes the first thought that the world will be end because nowadays so many people have desire too much, sometimes it makes human do everything, even though it is positive or negative to get her/his desire. Then, the poet expresses his second thought that the end of the world will be happened if the people always keep hatred each other. They never realized that it makes the downfall of the mentality and it become the physical and mental war.

The intention of this poem is trying to remind us do not be a ambitious human, we may have desire but do not make it too much. Do not keep the hatred in our heart one to another, but forgive one to another.

On Frost’s poem, “Fire and Ice”, it is a kind of an expression of his emotion. It is the author’s idea of his own experience or thought. The general meaning of “Fire and ice” is about the doomsday or the Judgement Day, as some people say that the world may be will end in fire or in ice. The detailed meaning itself, the author conveys his opinion in he beginning of the poem, as what some people say, the world will end in fire, some say it will end in ice. Next, he inclined to choose the crack of doom will happen in fire. But if it can happen twice, he tought that ice is as great as fire, quite deathly.
The author arouse his intention to the readers to remind them that there will be come a day that this world will be destructed in fire or in ice. The feelings of the reader would make them realize, to prepare themselves, to do better in their lives.

The theme of this poem of course the Judgement Day. Like the author says in the first line; “some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice”. The subject matter of this poem is the way how the world will end, could be in fire or in ice.

The connotative words that Frost used in Fire and Ice are “from what I’ve tasted of desire”. It shows his deepest feelings. Fire suggests the destuction by fire in everywhere, Ice suggests the frozen world. In his poem, he imagine that the world would twice to perish like burn like in hell or frozen in ice.

Fire and Ice is a single stanza, consist of nine lines. The poem is end in “e” rhyme. This make the reader feel easy whenever they read this poem.

Fire and ice talk about the end of the world. Fire to symbolize passion, desire, lust and ice to symbolize hate, destruction and indifference. I think he wanted to make a point about the different predictions of the fate of our world by both contrasting parties. The end of the world is also brought up in the poem since excessive reasoning and use of logic as well as excess passion and emotion have the power to destroy us all, but in different ways.
In the beginning, Robert Frost’s describe about fire could mean warm, pursuing only our own interests, while ice detaching ourselves from the world and being uncaring about what happens.
In this poem the poet writes that the ending of the world by fire or ice.. Fire and ice are two elements which can be considered as opposed. These feelings are obviously opposed.
The connotation in this poem are world means fire represents desire, lust. Ice represent hate. Tasted mean of experience.
The poet describe the imagery of this poem that ice is an expression people sometimes use to something of this nature. Fire is selfish, but it is still motivated by love and desire.

    • Good job, Linda!

However, this analysis of yours will be better if you include the analysis on more images, connotations, and rhyme in it. Next time better, OK?

Wordsworth’s Fire and Ice is a descriptive poem in which the poet tells there are wickedness and kindness in the world. The poet begins by telling the opinion of the people that “some say the world will end in fire” it means that the wickedness will end the world. On the other side, “some say in ice” it means that the world will be ended by the kindness. The poet considers that if we have chance to live once again, the wickedness will destruct kindness because all desires that human has. From the way the poet tells that fire will dominate in the end of the world, we can see that implies that if we still follow our desires without separation. The world will be destroyed in wickedness even though it lives twice.
The intention of this poem is wickedness and kindness are the components of human’s life but it depends on us, if we choose to do wickedness we will get bad impact in our lives while if we choose to do the kindness we will live in happiness and peace.
The connotation words of this poem are “some” means people, “fire” refers to wickedness and “ice” is kindness.
The subject matter of the poem is the domination of wickedness seen by the poet, because the poem says that the author holds with the people who like to do bad things. The theme of this poem is there is no peace when the world ends if wickedness still rules over the world.
In this poem, the poet describes the imagery to carry us into the situation in this poem. By choosing word fire, fire in this poem shows how the impact that we can get from our bad attitude and behavior. Ice in this poem shows how the impact that we can get from our caring attitude and good behavior.

    Analysis:
“Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost describes the two things about the end of the world. Where there are two options for the end of the world or the end times. The first is with fire, and the second is with ice. Harlow Shapley say that; holding the belief that the end of the world will come in two forms, “whether the earth will be burned, or permanent ice age will gradually destroy all life on earth” (Hansen 1). This poem also illustrates the emotional feelings of desire and hate people who are often perceived within a relationship. In this poem too stressed about the dangers of desire and hate in a relationship, which could lead to “end” of a relationship. Frost uses two problems, fire and ice, the problem was described as lust and hatred. Both issues were to be developed and eventually could destroy the world.

“The world” as a symbol for a relationship, and “ice” represents hate. All of these symbols help to bind together the poem by making wishes and feelings of hatred that is felt in a relationship. In the first two lines Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice”, the speaker presents two options for the end of the world, that is; one by fire and the other by ice. Fire associated with human emotions, desires and ice to hate. At the third line, the use of “I” shows a personal connection to the emotions of desire and hate. Putting this poem in the context of a relationship, desire and hate are emotions that people often feel. Fifth line: “But if I had to perish twice”. While one cannot die twice, the word is used to show the same desire dangers of hatred. The final line of the poem shows that human emotions of fire (desire) and ice (hate) are equally harmful and can easily bring about the “end” of a relationship. Finally, the paradox is used in the line: “But if I had to perish twice”. While one cannot die twice, the word is used to show the same desire dangers of hate. This is the detailed meaning of the poem.

Intentions of Frost know the power and impact of fire and ice. In a relationship, people can be more patient and can control themselves, so that their lives are not driven by hate and wishes.

Subject matter of this poem is about a feeling of unrest that occurred in a relationship that can lead to end the relationship. This can happen because of the desire and hatred that is often felt by humans.

Theme; passion or desire, knowledge or experience and death or destruction.

The first is with fire, and the second is with ice. Fire and Ice is a poem in which the author expresses fire to the emotional from ourselves, sometomes it caused by love or what happened in human’s life and ice to the angry because someone ever hates the person. The people have emotions, so they can angry and sad. So, Robert frost can describe the word “I” in this poem to the emptions that people feel, what do they want and angry or hate in their lives. This poem means the relation between what do we want and hate. This poem talks about desire and angry or hate because there are two examples of emotional in their minds and hearts. Every people have the relationships between them and their friends. In their lifes and their experiences, they use their emotions to express what do they feel. Robert Frost thinks that fire is what do we want and ice is what do we feel, consists of hate and angry. The final line of this poem talk about the end of relationships between us and our friends. This is the detailed meaning of this poem.

The intention of the writer is this poem difficult to understand, but we can imagine fire and ice to understand this poem easily. When we read the word “fire”, imagine that fire related to the emotions but “ice” related to angry and hate. So, fire and ice are different, and we can see the differences between fire and ice according to the what does it means.

The subject matter of this poem is emotional of someone and the anger because someone ever hates his or her friends who doesn’t love him or her in our lives.

The theme of the poem is the emotions of us in our lives about the relationships between us and our friends that consists of what do we feel or what do we want and angry caused by hates to the person who didn’t care or love with us. I think it is all about what we feel in our heart that happened in our lives.

There are some connotations that I know in this poem. First, the word “fire” means the emotional of someone. Second, the word “ice” is about the anger caused by hates to his or her friends who didn’t care or love with him or her. The word “tasted” is response from us about what do we feel. The word “favor” is a conditions who cares about angry or hate,

I can find the imagery analysis in this poem. The word “fire” used in the title and at this poem. “Fire” that means emotional from our heart can be found in our lives that happened every day because humans have hearts, so they can use their emotions to express what do they feel. The word “ice” found in the title and at this poem, too. “Ice” use for anger, hate, and sadness, how deep we feel for human’s life problems in our relationships between us and our friends. Finally, we must care our relationships between us and our friends and hope that we will happy and enjoy at the end of our relationships.

Many people have problems such as love, family, friendship or relationship to other people. In this poem, the author says that fire as someone who feel angry because their problems in their life talking about relationship between them and their families, their love or their relationship. In my opinion, related this poem, when the people have been bad experience in relationship or love, the people always use their emotional which are come from their mind or their heart. In this poem has deep meaning, consists of fire and ice. Fire shows someone’s angry and ice show someone’s desire who they want to do.

In my opinion, the intention of this poem is easily to understand for the people because this poem uses words such as “Fire” and “Ice” which often find in their life. Fire and ice have compare their meaning according to this poem. The people can be more patient and control themselves, so that their live aren’t driven by hate and wishes.

The subject matter of this poem are fire and ice. Fire desribes emotions. And an ice describes desire and hate or sadness. I think it’s all about what the people feel in their life especially when the people to face their problems in a relationship.

This poem has conotation, such as fire, ice, tasted, and favor. I think the author describes the fire is as emotion, ice describes hate and desire, tasted describes feel and favor describes someone’s feeling. There some words in his poem which are contain the conotation. For example, ice describes the people want to do something which comes from their heart.

In this poem, I found the imagery. Fire means emotion which are comes from their mind or their feeling, ice means desire and hate which are to show their angry in their problems. In this poem “ice” describes desire from our heart who want to do something to become happy or enjoyable in our life. He hopes this poem is going to give some descriptions for the people’s life, especially in relationship between another people.

“Fire and ice” is a descriptive poem in which the author expresses the anger. The author begins the poem by compare his feeling with the other’s word about the end of world that will end in fire or ice. He describes his feeling of anger or hate like a fire, so he feels that the end of world just have anger and hate. But, the anger of the poet will be lost if he can destruct it like destruct ice, and apparently the fire of anger can be vague by the way like that.
The fire and ice is the subject matter of the poem. It describe of the poet’s feeling. Because nearly all of the lines are dominated by the descriptions. It is true that the poet, talks about other thing like destruction ice, but this is merely meant to be a comparison to emphasize his hate or anger feeling.
He thinks of others’ words about how the world will end in fire or in ice (first and second line). The third and fourth line, he compares others’ words with his feeling. But, in the fifth line he try to contend his anger by destruct it like destruct ice, because he feels that it is the best way to contend his anger. The poet tells us that the anger that not finished can give bad effect to our life.
The use of anger as the theme of a work, the poet describe his feeling about his anger through the poem. He want to share to us that the anger until long time will make this world destruct because of the hate.
To show his feeling, he believes that sometimes imaginative thinking is more useful. That is why, in this poem, he writes “from what I’ve tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire” (li. 3-4). Through these lines, the poet probably means to emphasize the use of imagination, emotion, and feeling (elements of imaginative thinking) in order to express his feeling.
In this poem, the poet uses images to let the reader involve in the experiences he is communicating. For instance, he writes “tasted of desire”. It describes what he feels. Perhaps some others image that he feels had adhered. “I hold it those who favor fire”, describe that his feeling like a fire.

In Fire and Ice, Robert describes that the world will be end in fire and ice. This is the general meaning of this poem.
In this poem, Robert wanted to clarify that this world will be destroyed in the fire and ice, he likens the ice and fire because of two things can never be fused each other. If world end in fire this world will become hot and all will be burned, and on the contrary, if the ice then the world will be cold. He said that if the will perish twice then he will better understand that the hatred was very bad implications for every sufferer. This the detailed meaning.
The poet doesn’t simply set out to describe fire and ice but to make us consider that two things is differ. In fire, the bad things is the whole of this world will be full with hates and angry In ice, maybe everybody just thinking about her/himself without feel that she/he need the other. Because they didn’t greet each other. This is the intention of this poem.
To recognize figurative language Robert Frost used personification. Because he immitade that fire and ice is alive.

Detailed meaning in the first line and the second line i personally see it as a how the writer explain about two ways to lead the death. Fire is the way for the emotion. When we are angry, our faces may turn red, our body temperature may rise and we loose all control of ourselves as we burn furiously in a wild, unstoppable conflagration of rage. When we are deeply in love we also burn in a very similar way. The red symbolize the emotions and the emotion symbolize the fire. While ice detaching ourselves from the world and being uncaring about what happens, someone who stiff and just dont mind about everything.

Intention for the people is must be very sensitively about our emotion “fire&ice” the two different things is teach us how to be a good person to face the life

the subject matter is on the people who are close to the fire or ice. Each one of the people have a connection to the death ways. The fire and ice is a different ways but it have a same meaning, that is the end of life or the death.

Theme from this poem is the the end of our life, the death, or the doomsday. fire and ice, as the poem’s controlling emotion, emotion which symbolize the two extremes of lust and hate.

The connotation of this poem is the emotion, fire means the spirit, burn, angry and wild, but ice mean uncaring, stiff

in imagery analysis the frost use the two different things or ways to lead us into the end of life. The fire in the Frost poem is when we can’t controll our emotion it can be a something’s not good, our body temperature may rise and we loose all control of ourselves as we burn furiously in a wild, unstoppable conflagration of rage. While the ice in Frost poem is when we just dont care about everything around us or spiritless about what will happen around us. Being a stiff person. And finally this poem have a good meter. the subject matter is on the people who are close to the fire or ice.

In the poem Fire and Ice above the poet wants to tell us about two things that can end the world according to some people opinion, those are fire and ice. Two things are deeply different and dangerous. The world here doesn`t have denotation meaning because the poem actually always tells about something in connotation, so the world in this poem could mean a community that is one, rounded, bounded but it will run to the dissension by the things named fire and ice. Fire in this poem mean great wishing (tasted of desire) and ice is hate (I think enough of hate).

The subject matter and detailed meaning of the poem is two strengths that can make a community be destroyed if they include in community without anyone can consider that. Two things fire and ice are different, but they have the same strength that can make the world or community gets into destruction. Fire is hot, red that is symbol of spirit but if not used carefully, it can burn all of the things which it likes to burn with its great flames. Ice is cold, the symbol of calm and mysterious but it saves worse intention inside and sometimes it can melt and bring wet, floating or destroying for all things around it (is also great).

In this poem the poet writes that he has been ever in those situations. Using the I think I know enough of hate. For the first he think just fire or desire which can make a destruction in a community in the sentence I`ve tasted of desire but then he emphasizes in the sentence But if it had to perish twice that if it want to destroy a community more greater, just the hate to power the community together with the desire so te destruction will be more serious than if just fire or desire which be the power. The word twice means more serious.

The connotation in this poem are world means a community, fire means great wishing or desire, ice means mysterious but has worse intention (hate), destruction means dissension or problem in a community, taste means the poet`s experience in his life, perish means process to destroy the community. The poem has end rhyme e.

The poet describe the imagery of this poem to bring the readers feel the situation. By using word fire the readers can feel how the situation will be heat up if everyone stay with their great wishing without care about other`s. The ice will describe how the condition is not getting interesting if in a community the situation looks so insipid because of everyone mysterious solitude but actually saves worse intention, how cold that atmosphere.

The intention of this poem is that all member of a community must be careful and sensitive to these things, fire and ice (great wishing or desire and hate). Two things that we hear just simple but if these are ignored with the egoism of every member, they at any time will be the destruction of a community and there will not be a community. In a community we must support one another because we need other people in our life and just like a world is our place to live, a community also is a view of a world we stay in togetherness.

    • Wow…! Good job Welli,
Your analysis is quite comprehensive. I enjoyed reading it. However, you still use ungrammatical sentences, such as “For the first he think[s] just fire or desire which …”

In addition, you need to elaborate each point so that your reader fully understands what you meant to express. Next time better, please. You can do it!

    “ Fire and Ice “
This poem tells the story of what happens when the world will end and in this poem also tells us that there are two lives should we live that is fire and ice, or in other words evil and good.

In this poem the author wants to convey that we must choose life because then we are going through it alone and authors would also like to convey to us that if we chose hatred and destruction for the second time we should be able to say enough to hate and start our lives with peace or good. Because no matter what hatred would disappear with kindness.

After we read this poem we can make the intention that we should not constantly be in hatred or fire because everything we do if we are to do with hatred or with fire then everything will be in vain. Where as if we do with our good will be succeed and therefore we must be smart in choosing.

Principal of all this is the fire will not last long because it will in the opponent by the goodness.
Subject matter this poem described is our live will be ending in fire or ice so we must do the best or goodness in our live.

Theme for this poem tell about hatred and peace

In this poem also used some imagery that our live will end in fire and the other say in ice and finally, we must do goodness until we can same with Ice (we must have good relationship in our live)

    Analysis of Fire and ice
Fire and Ice poem is the poem that the writer (Robert Frost) described about the end of the world. Through every word that he wrote in the poem, it gived explanation that world maybe end in fire or ice, but from what he had exprerienced he prefer that the world will end in fire. Eventhough if it had to perish twice he believed and sure because he knows enough about hate, the world will be better end in fire, fire can destructed the ice.
The poem does not simply set out to describe or does not only reflect the world ending but destruction of person. If it is destroyed by ice , regret that feelings of emptyness it is enough to destroy a person abut also love and passion, in relation to fire is such a strong and uncontrollable feelings which enough to consume a person completely. From what the poem described we can see that the writer implied that a person can be destructed by fire ( desire, burning) or ice ( hate). This is the intention of this poet.
For the subject matter that the writer described in this poem is the ending of the world by fire or ice. Almost of the lines is the explanation of fire and ice. He compares them and the writer choosed that the fire is stonger than the ice. It can find in the last line that saying ,to say that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice.Pay attention for what the writer described dominantly in this poem, fire and ice is the theme that the writer talking about.
Fire and ice poem contains some connotations. World in this poem can be suggested as a person; fire means desire, spirit or burning; ice suggests as hate. The poem uses words that mean or suggest passion / consumption , knowledge/experience and death / destruction. Passion and consumption are suggested by the words fire, desire, and taste. End ,fire ,ice ,perish and destruction all denote death and destruction.
The writer use of meter and rhythm in “Fire and Ice” underlies his hidden theme that moderation is the world’s salvation. Frost uses two extremes, fire and ice, as the poem’s controlling images, images which symbolize the two extremes of lust and hate. These two extremes, he expostulates, will eventually destroy the world. The rhythm and meter of the poem provides a solution to the world’s impending doom. He chooses the fast-flowing, slower-moving as a framework for his understated theme of the world’s destruction and potential salvation. He casually states “I hold with those who favor fire” , and “for destruction ice / Is also great / and would suffice” to comment on cataclysmic events. Although his poetic form contrasts the overt theme of the poem, it underscores its underlying meaning.
In this poem Frost also used some imagery like world will end in fire ; some say in ice. World will end in fire it does not mean that this real world will burn through fire or frozen by ice. By using imagery the writer try to suggest idea and to reproduce sensations mentally, convey emotion and it is necessary for every reader to consider it.

    • Hi Sri Darma,

What interesting ideas you express in your analysis. You also managed to combine each point with theories you’ve studied. Good job!
However, please be more careful with your tenses in the future.
      Practice makes better.

imagery :: according to expert analysis “fire and ice” are both have potential to end this world, hates why Robert frost use the word “some say”, on personal “fire” refer to human desire, and “ice” refer to hate, that in this poem both are have potential to end a relationship,
“ice.” Ice represents hate. Ice is the freezing temperatures of hell attempt to drive the life out of a person . Similarly, hate forces the other person away, driving the life out of a relationship. When left uncontrolled, these darker emotions can bring about the end of a relationship.

    Connotations and Denotations ::
the poet uses the words “desire” , “fire” , “taste” refer to sense of consumerism or passion, while the words “some say” refers to knowledge of experts about how this world will ends (like I wrote above –> in “fire” and “ice”), and the word “know” (Robert frost knows) refers to his experience, and the words “ice”, “fire”, “End”, and “perish” are refer to death and destruction.

    figurative language ::
    >fire is an antagonist symbolization of human desire content of emotion and jealousy,
    >ice is a symbolization of hate
    >the world is a symbolization of human relationship.

As an added he uses understatement “And would suffice” which means fire and ice both can harm a relationship, and “if I had to perish twice” we know that human can’t die two times so it figuratively means that desire is as harmful as hate.

So the conclusion and moral content on this poetry is that hate and ambition inside Human being can easily break a relationship, just much as the fire and ice can destruct in the world.

    • Hello Gracia,

You tried hard to analyze the expressive elements of the poem. But, where are the more important elements, i.e. general meaning, detailed meaning, intention, subject, and theme?

However, try your best in the future.

  36. Dear all attendees of Literature I,

Write your individual analysis on the following poem of Robert Frost’s. Use the above analysis Wordsworth’s “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” as a model. Include the general meaning, detailed meaning, intention, subject matter, theme, connotation, and imagery analysis in your paper. However, you don’t need to put sub-headings. Just write in essay form. Write in double spaces using Times New Roman 12″. Print your essay on quarto or A4 papers.

This analysis is treated as your mid-term assignment. So, submit it to me on the mid-term examination day. Good luck.

    Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
    Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice
    (Robert Frost)

      • Hi Sekar,

Your points in the analysis are interesting. Unfortunately they are not appropriately elaborated. For instance, you wrote that “the poet make[s] us think what will be happened if world will end in the power of fire and ice.” But you also write that ““fire” symbolizes the desire, … and the “ice” hatred.” Why didn’t you proceed relating these two points by emphasizing: “The poet reminds us of the bad effects of having the world end with either fire (desire) or ice (hatred).

However, learning is a process. I hope you commit yourself to do your best in the future. I believe you can do it. Good luck!
